Patti is worried about mice in the 5th wheel during storage. We did notice some droppings last season when we dewinterized.. Do we use a bait to kill them? If they eat it they will likely die inside. Or is it feasible to just hopefully find their entry point or place the traps outside underneath?
Is there something else tried and true?
Thank you.

We have never had a mouse problem and we live out in the country. There are plenty of field mouse that want to find a good place to spend winter months. On all my campers over the years I remove anything they can use to make a bed. I also take everything that resembles a food source out and put it it a large plastic tote with a secure lid. I vacuum all drawers, pantry and areas that store food or prepared food.

My son who use to store his camper along side mine decided to leave things in his pass thru compartment like paper towel rolls, wipe rags and a beach bag with beach towels nicely folded inside. In the spring of that year he found nest of baby mouse, urine, poop and a few offspring that did not make it. He ended up throwing away all those items and disinfecting the pass thru floor. The next year he listened to me,

You can look for easy pathways underneath into your camper and using steel wool block those off. No food, no water, nothing to make beds out of along with making entry hard will go a long way in preventing mouse problems.

:like :like

The one thing I was thinking about was climbing under a d looking for entry and stuffing in the steel wool. Thank you for the removing most everything idea. Would that include bedding, bath stuff, etc. We would not remove the memory foam mattress. No place to store it.

We've never had mice in the cabin area, but once we were at a state park and I saw something out of the corner of my eye, and it turned out that a mouse ran down the I-beam of the frame (there is a little ledge for them) and had started to build a nest in the propane tank area. Open Range leaves that wide open for ventilation for propane fumes, but is open on both sides of the fifth wheel. As soon as we got home I throughly blocked it off with mesh, so there is still good airflow.

Good idea John. I just took my tanks out to clean/inspect/fill and noticed large 'ventilation ports'. Will screen them in soon.

No we live the comforter on the bed and the sheets are folded and left in the closet over the washer/dryer. All our towels and things like that are in the bathroom cabinet. There is no way for a mouse to get to the cabinet,(I just jinxed myself), and we never have had trouble with the bedding.

Food and crumbs are your worse enemy for mouse. Paper products are their favorite for making beds to have their young in. As far as I know I have all easy access points covered.

just had to tear under belly out chipmunks and squirrels ate heat ducts boy did i get a shock when i dropped belly .not sure how 1 heat vent to under belly makes it 4 season rv there was no insulation it now has 1.5 insulation under the belly it is no wonder we have electric problems they just put it any where i spent a hour tying up wires and water lines replaced 4 sheets of under belly 4x8 sheets changes the way it is put on .i was surprised on how tanks are mounted i wont worry about losing any OR done a good job of mounting them.i wished the had done a better job of protecting wiring and water lines . hope i didnt need the aluminumsheet in under belly squirrels ate it .we took out total of about 2 5 gallon buckets of walnuts .redoing under belly is not for the person that dont want to work my wife and i have busted our butts to get it done next year electric valves now that we fixed underbelly all we have to do is drop 4x8 sheet where vales are. glad we tore it apart i feel safer going down the road now.

While you have the underbelly removed, consider replacing the flex duct with rigid ducts. Much improved airflow.

the line going to toyhauler was ate in half replaced with 3 ' pvc only think i could get to fit but what a difference lol i now get good air flow to garage. we wonder if it was always torn we never had the air fow we have now.we also put in the rigid duct work it is a lot thicker citters cant chew it.

What kind of "rigid ducts" are you using? PVC or some type of aluminum?

I went with standard 4" aluminum ducts. I also insulated them with slipover insulation tubes.

OK, thanks... I've got the furnace out of my rig right now. The outside wall is moving around (Lippert recall frame X-ties fell out) & furnace came loose from the wall. Sure is a lot of duct work just laying around in the crawl space!!

I ended up re-ducting our whole unit with rigid (insulated) ducts. There was also a guy with an OR 5th wheel in the Northeast that did his unit also.

It didn't cost that much and was convenient to do while the belly was dropped. I also added bat insulation where I could and added air-dams where appropriate.

i could only use the 3 in pvc could not get anything bigger to fit but now i have heat in garage also the heating duct for under belly was just laying in under belly chipmunks came up through duct work started destroying camper. hope we have it fix now i added a bunch of structs to under belly also put new material under rv in 4ft. width incase i have to change a valve i dont have to drop whole under belly when i am done i will post finished job.
